Managing Your Reputation - A Guide to Crisis Management for Church CommunicatorsJim McDonnellExpertise in crisis management is particularly important for those in charge of Church communications, such as national and diocesan communication offices. Internal Church problems can quickly become public and the subject of local or national media interest - highlighting and intensifying the always complex relationship between Church and media.

In a crisis, above all, the communications office has to act as an advocate for the Church's position, explaining and defending the Church's actions and views, correcting erroneous or misleading information and trying to improve the quality of journalists' interpretation and understanding of unfolding events. But at the same time, the office has to act as an advocate for the media within the Church. In this publication, you will find concrete advice on how to prepare for a crisis, establishing a Crisis Management team and developing a respective action plan as well as guidelines in respective media communications.

Perspectives for strengthening the sustainability of Radio Wallón Fostering cooperation in web-based services Follow-up on a new initiative by Stem van Afrika (SvA) CAMECO Practice Series Audience Dialogue Global Online Directory of Catholic Media Initiatives25 years of developing self-sustainability The top FIVE PublicationsIndigenous Communication in Southern ChilePerspectives for strengthening the sustainability of Radio Wallón In April, CAMECO conducted a workshop with the staff of Radio Wallón (Licanray), a station situated in the heartland of the indigenous people of Southern Chile, the Mapuche. The station forms part of the Mapuche association Xeg-Xeg, involved in social, political and cultural development work. Supported by Dreikönigsaktion Austria, the workshop aimed to analyse the major strengths and weaknesses of the radio station, and to assist Radio Wallón in developing perspectives for long-term sustainability. Reaching an audience of up to 100.000 Mapuche, scattered in rural areas, Radio Wallón has been contributing to the revival of the Mapuche language (Mapudungun) and traditional Mapuche feasts in the public sphere. Until now, the station depends completely on voluntary work for its operations and, due to the low-income profile of its audience, advertising revenues of Radio Wallón are quite limited. As the station is situated at one of Chile's most prominent summer tourism centres, the Radio Wallón staff identified various income generation opportunities by offering "Mapuche cultural products" (language courses, handicrafts, traditional medicines) to tourists. Therefore, the workshop concluded in developing a feasibility study on a Mapuche cultural centre with the radio station at its very heart.Back to ...

Statistics

Statistics Project Statistics 2009Last year CAMECO received and processed 494 projects. These can be divided up into the following categories. 35.6% were radio projects (technical equipment, programme production, training etc.).24.9% referred to journalistic training, conferences, media centres and diocesan media commissions ("general projects").19.4% of the applications were related to print media (newspapers, periodicals, book publishing, printing presses).15% dealt with the area of video, television, film and audio-visual group media.5.1% were projects in the field of informatics and telecommunications (Internet, computer networks, satellite technology).Geographical Origin of the projects received in 2009: Since its foundation in 1970 CAMECO assessed approximately 17,777 media projects. Tremendous changes have taken place in the world of media since then. These changes have also had a strong influence on the work of our partners and the media activities of the Church in general. For a long time, CAMECO received predominantly print sector projects (newspapers, periodicals, book publishing, printing presses). Since the 1990s the electronic media, especially radio, have become much more important. Chart: Distribution of all projects processed by CAMECO (1970-2009) according to media field Technical innovations and decreasing prices for digital equipment have also encouraged a growing number of video initiatives, whereas audio-visual group media (audio-cassettes, slide presentations etc.) still play a role as media for education and pastoral work in only a few Asian and African countries.Another trend is the increasing demand for training due to a rising awareness of the importance of staff qualifications. This is especially evident in Africa and Central & ...

Project Screening

Project Screening The assessment of project applications is one of CAMECO's core tasks. Several donor agencies request the screening of applications they receive in order to facilitate their decision-making processes on possible subsidies. Likewise, partners in the different regions can rely on our services, asking for our advice in the preparation of project applications to be presented to funding organisations. In 2009, CAMECO dealt with a total of 494 projects. 22 funding agencies and other donor organisations (such as dioceses, mission procurement offices of religious congregations and some non-Church related entities) asked for assessments of altogether 290 projects; additionally, 204 applications were sent directly by partners in the regions. The proportion of assessments for so-called "direct advice" has been constantly growing over the past years. This screening of draft applications could also be seen as a consultancy process, supporting our partners in developing and presenting their initiatives in a way that substantiates their adequacy in a specific context and for defined target-groups as well as offering reliable perspectives for sustainability. Thus, something first thought of as a preliminary check of a project application actually leads to a project planning process in dialogue with CAMECO.In the screening process, the following aspects are being considered: Profile of a media project (analysis of concepts and strategies; target groups; messages to be communicated)Context (national/regional media environment, competing initiatives, legal situation of the media) Sustainability (organisational structure: responsibilities, decision-making processes; participation of stakeholders: social sustainability; medium- and long-term financial perspectives) Competence of staff (qualifications and ongoing training) ...

Welcome to the fifth CAMECO Update! Inspiring Perspectives on Minority and Migrants’ Media Indicators Collaboration group joins mediaME-WikiThe Top FIVE New Publications4th FoME Symposium: Media on the Move Inspiring Perspectives on Minority and Migrants’ Media As the public discourse on the coverage of migration issues and ethnic minorities up to now has primarily focused on western media, the symposium Media on the Move - Migrants, Minorities and the Media proved to be an inspiring forum for the exchange of concrete experiences for media practitioners and migration experts from developing and transitional countries. CAMECO organised this event on behalf of the Forum Media and Development (FoME), that took place from September 25th to 27th in Bonn, Germany, hosted by the Protestant Academy of the Rhineland and sponsored by the German Federal Office for Migration and Refugees. The speakers approached the topic Migrants, Minorities and the Media from three different perspectives. One angle was the application of communication strategies targeting migrants and refugees, based on examples from Costa Rica, Georgia and Tanzania. A second field of examination focused on the social and political relevance of Burmese, Indonesian, Turkish and Russian Diaspora media. Thirdly, a variety of case studies from South Africa and South-Eastern Europe concentrated on the lessons learned within minority media projects as well as possibilities to strengthen diversity in the mainstream media. The latter resulted in the recommendation to investigate the commercial potential of minority content for mainstream media. The contributions to the symposium will be published soon in the ...

5th Symposium Forum Medien und Entwicklung (FoME):Measuring Change IIExpanding Knowledge on Monitoring and Evaluation in Media DevelopmentInspiring presentations and lively discussions marked the 5th symposium of the Forum Medien und Entwicklung (FoME) that took place in Bad Honnef, from 12-14 October. The nearly 70 participants - among them representatives from donor organisations, media implementing organisations and the academic community - created a stimulating atmosphere, proving that "monitoring and evaluation in media development" is not in the least a "dry" academic topic. The symposium was also the occasion to launch the mediaME-Wiki. mediaME - media development Monitoring and Evaluation - is a participatory platform for sharing tools and approaches in monitoring and evaluation, initiated during the previous symposium Measuring Change, organised two years ago.
The four thematic blocks followed up earlier discussions (Measuring Change: Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation in 2007) on assessing media landscapes, experiences in evaluating the quality and impact of training, and how the media's contribution to social and political change is assessed. Donor and media assistance organisations presented their approaches to M&E and shared their experiences with existing frameworks. A publication of the presentations and recommendations will soon be available. Assessing Media Landscapes The strengths and weaknesses of existing indices to assess media landscapes were examined during the first part of the symposium. Andrew Puddephatt from London based Global Partners noted, that very little attention is being paid to sustainability in media assistance. At the same time, new media usage is not being taken sufficiently into consideration ...

40 years of CAMECOTowards a world of people centred communication On May 6th CAMECO was celebrating its 40th anniversary. On this occasion we took a closer look at our cooperation with partners and contemplated perspectives for Church communications. Content:Jubilee celebrations of 6th May 2009The World at a Round Table: Catholic Media Work in a Digital AgeSudan Catholic Radio Network (SCRN)REBRIK - a children's magazine in SlovakiaPress Kit
Jubilee celebrations of 6th May 2009"Sofie was a strict companion, but exactly the right one for us!" Still three years later, Katarína Jantáková, the editor-in-chief of the Slovakian children's magazine Rebrik, is grateful for the consultancy by the Catholic Media Council (CAMECO). In 2006 the magazine, which is published by the Catholic youth association eRKo, found itself in an existence-threatening crisis. Today Rebrik is well positioned again. At the 40-year jubilee of CAMECO, consultancy office for communications in developing and transition countries, on 6th May in Aachen, Jantáková gave an account of how it had all come about. The focus on a clearly defined age group, the design of child-oriented identification figures, the setting up of an editorial advisory committee and well-targeted marketing activities were, so Jantáková, the result of an intensive consultancy process by Sofie Jannusch, CAMECO desk-officer for Central and Eastern Europe."We are very grateful for the constructive criticism", Sr. Paola Moggi from the Sudan Catholic Radio Network (SCRN) summed up her experience with CAMECO.
