Job Vacancy: Desk Officer for Latin America and the Caribbean

Who We Are

Communication shapes how people understand their societies, participate in public debate and build relationships across communities. CAMECO is a non-profit consultancy specialising in media and communication in the Global South and countries in transition. We work with local partner organisations as well as donor organisations – including numerous international faith-based aid organisations – to strengthen community-oriented, development-focused and Church-related media and communication.

Our work combines professional media and communication expertise with commitment to participation, dialogue and sustainable development. We advise organisations on strategies and projects, help develop viable approaches to media and communication, assess project proposals and accompany partners from an initial idea through implementation and learning.

Our international team brings together regional, thematic and methodological expertise, and we form an active part of the German and international media development community. We value professional standards as much as initiative and the willingness to develop new ideas.

Your Role

As Desk Officer, you will combine regional expertise with professional knowledge of media, communication and development cooperation. Your main responsibilities will include:

  • Reviewing and assessing project proposals from partner organisations in Latin America and the Caribbean;
  • Accompanying partners in the planning, implementation and further development of media and communication initiatives;
  • Developing and managing media development projects funded by public donors and private foundations;
  • Actively contributing to CAMECO's evolving areas of work, including Digital Literacy, Digital Capacity Development and Design Thinking.

The position offers considerable scope to shape your own area of responsibility. We are particularly interested in colleagues who not only manage ongoing work reliably, but also recognise opportunities, bring forward ideas and enjoy developing them together with others.

What You Bring (Qualification)

We are looking for a professional who combines regional knowledge with a strong interest in communication and media as instruments for participation, dialogue and social development.

  • University degree in a field relevant to the tasks (e.g., communication studies, journalism, Latin American studies, ethnology or development studies)
  • Previous professional experience in the media industry and/or in development cooperation
  • Substantial international experience, preferably in Latin America, and a sound understanding of the region's social, political and media contexts
  • Experience in digital literacy education, capacity building, training or coaching
  • Familiarity with community, social, non-profit and/or Church-related media and communication
  • Experience in project development and project cycle management
  • A good understanding of current debates and approaches in international development and media development
  • Experience in working with NGOs, committees and associations, funding organisations or comparable institutions.

Language Skills

  • Business fluent language skills in Spanish and English
  • Portuguese and German would be an additional advantage.

Personal Requirements

Our work requires professional judgement as well as the ability to build constructive relationships across institutional and cultural contexts. We are therefore looking for someone who:

  • Works in a structured, analytical and solution-oriented way;
  • Communicates complex issues clearly and sensitively;
  • Is comfortable facilitating discussions, workshops and collaborative processes;
  • Enjoys working as part of an international team while taking responsibility for their own areas of work;
  • Works constructively in politically sensitive and culturally diverse environments;
  • Combines reliability and flexibility with the ability to set priorities in a varied workload; and
  • Is willing to undertake work-related travel, particularly within Latin America and the Caribbean.

CAMECO's history and mandate are closely connected with the Catholic Church and international faith-based development cooperation. The position therefore requires a sound understanding or openness to working within Catholic and other faith-based institutional contexts.

The position offers a creative scope and a diverse field for your professional development. We offer an initial one-year contract, starting in January 2027, with the possibility of extension, a competitive salary, and social benefits package including an additional pension fund, and we are open to family-friendly working arrangements.

The position requires your presence in Aachen, Germany.

If you feel you would be suited to the position, please submit your application per email by 19th October 2026 to employment@cameco.org.

Please include a letter of motivation in English, your CV, as well as previous employment certificates and documentation.
