Review and approval of a 5-year strategic plan, Togo

From 26th to 30th May 2009, the Catholic National Commission for Social Communications held an Extraordinary General Assembly in Lomé to finalise and adopt a 5-year strategic plan. This meeting was the conclusion of a long process which had been started in November 2006. It was attended by about 20 participants from the seven dioceses of Togo and from the Catholic media outlets, as Radio Maria-Togo, the Catholic TV Spes, CEBILO as well as the Saint Augustine Africa Publishing House.

One year ago the commission had requested CAMECO to guide the process of the assembly. Mr. Michel Philippart, Africa Desk officer, facilitated the assembly by assessing the documents issued in preparatory meetings. The participants reviewed the priorities of the National Catholic Commission for Social Communications, defining the overall goals and the results aimed for by the commission. At the close of the assembly the participants approved the strategic pastoral plan for communications for the Church of Togo. The global objective of the pastoral plan was then defined as: "The Media and Catholic communicators are to be witnesses and promoters of the paths of reconciliation, justice, and peace for the Church of God in Togo and spokesmen for those who have no voice."

The commission presented the strategic plan to the Bishops' Conference at the end of the assembly. The bishops now have to discuss and adopt the plan. Meanwhile, awaiting the final approval, the commission relies on an inspiring and results-oriented plan which should adequately guide its work in the coming years. (PH)
